Wilander - G2 winner

12th October, 2008

Wilander (pictured by Quinn Rooney/Getty Images AsiaPac) defeats the older horses at set weights for age in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes.

Wilander confidently ran down the front running Lucky Secret in the dying strides of the Group 2 1000m feature sprint at Caulfield on Saturday and confirmed Darley's desire to produce a future stallion by Exceed and Excel. What made it even more poignant was that it was against the older more seasoned sprinters! At weight for age, Wilander only had a 4.5kg pull on the Group 1 placed Kaphero and the 8 time winner from 11 starts Lucky Secret.

Wilander has only gone under the starters orders on 5 occaisons and has won 3 of these events. He dominated from the front in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude as a 2 year old, but settle kindly for K McKevoy today to grab his win in the dying strides after tenaciously reeling in the leader. He is clearly a progressive horse and Lee Freedman has been incredibly astute with the training of him, other trainers may have squeezed the lemon sooner in the prep and left nothing for the Stallion making races such as this and maybe even the Group 1 Coolmore Ascot Vale Stakes on Derby Day.

Furthermore this race is aptly named after one of Lee's favourite horses, Schillaci; the winner of 8 Group 1's and 16 races in a monumental career that stretched over 36 starts. A true Champion and a figure head for Wilander to follow.
