Wallinger or more commonly known around Markdel stables as Wally - went from breaking his maiden at Morphetville on the 2nd of May to winning down the famous Flemington straight only two weeks later.
Racing tractably under Dwayne Dunn the Michael Sissian and David Howard owned Wallinger settled on the pace and relaxed kindly. Given his marching orders with 400m, the Freedman galloper duly found what was required to overcome the exposed Kwassa Kwassa and the fast finishing Dane Babylon and won the $75,000 1000m two year old event in 59.17sec.
"He was probably more impressive the week before last" Said Anthony Freedman from the winner's circle "And I would suggest that he is a better horse coming off a bend. However, he is now two from two since we gelded him and he looks a progressive type."
Wallinger is the first foal of the unraced Agnes world mare Angel Of The South, a half sister to Galaxy Stakes (G1) winner and current leading first crop sire Charge Forward (Red Ransom).
A flow of winners in recent times continues the promising start made by Darley Stud’s French Derby (G1) winner Shamardal (USA).In the past few weeks the son of Giant’s Causeway has registered wins with Femina Fashion (ex So Tempted by Jeune (GB) at Ipswich, Shamoline Warrior (ex Picholine by Dehere (USA) at Sale, Crash'm (ex Ms Gatecrasher by Mr Henrysee (USA) at Wyong, in addition to Wallinger’s metropolitan double.
Shamardal (pictured) returns for his fourth season (missed 2007 due to EI) at Darley Stud where his 2009 fee has been set at $27,500.
