Based only 10 minutes from the Beach, the Freedman Training complex near Rye offers the perfect environment for your horses well being. Having moved to Markdel in 2002, Lee Freedman has sent out 32 Group 1 winners and three of the past 7 Champion Fillies in Alinghi, Serenade Rose and Special Harmony.
Freedman said the dramatic move to Markdel in 2002 both reinvigorated his attitude towards training thoroughbreds, and also his style of training.
"The setting up of Markdel was a big gamble, but the results are plain to see" stated Lee Freedman. "The horses are happier in the country environment. There is far less pressure on them here than if they were trained on a city track.
"Markdel offers an amazing variety in things to do for the horses. They spend a lot of time out of the boxes in paddocks and yards. They walk to the tracks through a myriad of undulating sand hills and I have an endless number of ways of inducing variety into their work."
Freedman said that not only has there been a change for the better in the demeanour of both horses and staff, but the steady hill work on the both the grass and sand tracks has resulted in a dramatic fall in injuries to the horses.
"At Markdel, they suffer fewer injuries, generally recover quicker from races, which means you can keep your good ones going longer and get more wins out of the ones capable of winning," he said.
It was the superb facilities at Markdel that attracted owner Tony Santic to send the great stayer mare Makybe Diva to Freedman. The result was two Melbourne Cups, a Cox Plate and a place in history.
It's a great place for the horsemen as well: "I like the lifestyle here," Freedman said. "I like to see and hear the horses gallop. One of the worst things about training from a city base was that most of the gallops were done in the dark. I don't ever want to return to working in the dark again."
