Champions of the Turf

The door is AJHAR for the Cups!

27th April, 2010

AJHAR (USA)

Ajhar (pictured by Taron Clarke) was dominant in breaking his Australian debut at Flemington in the $100,000 William Newton VC Handicap at Flemington over 2600m.

In what has become an outstanding 2 months for the Ball & Chain #2 Syndicate, Ajhar rallied hard to give the Freedman owners their 4th win from 6 starters since Fanjura first saluted in March. Since then the "Three Convicts" have recorded a win at Group 3 level in the Easter Cup, Above Average's placing in the Listed 2000m at Randwick on Oaks Day and a further two Saturday wins.

Ajhar's win was also a telling point in the 6 year old geldings career as it was his first attempt at the 2600m and that win doubled his career earnings! Purchased by Badger's Bloodstock for 65,000 gns this gelding by Diesis was formally trained by Marcus Tregoning and was bred and owned by Sheikh Hamdam Al Maktoum.

Dwayne Dunn gave the imported galloper a beautiful run in transit and had the Diesis gelding camped in the box seat throughout the first 2000m. In what was a thoroughly genuine run race, Dwayne angled out at the top of the straight and quickened smartly through the gap to quickly wrap up the event.

"I thought his run in the Wangaratta Cup was rather plain" said Lee Freedman "But I was willing to forgive him as the tight track and being shuffled back to last made it virtually impossible for him to feature."

"I think the blinkers have really worked wonders, but it also confirmed my belief that he needs a minimum of one and half miles to warm up into his races."
Ajhar appears to have pulled up well and he will now be prepared for the Listed 3200m Andrew Ramsden on the 15th May at Flemington.
