Spring Dreaming

30th June, 2009

It is hoped that the up and coming season for Lee Freedman will be the icing on top of solid set of performances by his two year olds. Given the fact that Markdel has produced 8 more 2 year old winners than his nearest rival with 25 to their tally and of these 25, 7 were stakes winning performances, the future for the Markdel's rising crop of 3 year olds is looking pretty rosey.

"I appreciate that a large majority of our success can be attributed to the continued support of Darley" said Lee Freedman "But I also think that our selection at the time of purchase was also more thorough in 2008 and I think that this is reflected in our results."

The 2009/10 crop of 3 year olds is shaping up as follows;

Mont Fleuri won smartly on her debut at Caulfield and her prep will invariably be pitched towards the middle distance and classic events during the Spring. However, she is not the sole contender with the virtually untapped exploits of Sweet Loraine, Pirouette and Cadenzia yet to be really tested. Throw into the mix that the Freedmans have a number of unraced fillies that are bred to run out a strong mile, then expect DLF to have a strong hand in the fillies events up to and over the mile in October and November.

The "four-in-a-row" filly Gibraltar Moon, the stakes winners Colour, Come Hither, Baby Corn and Mrs Kippling are all likely contenders for those Listed fillies events over 6f in the early part of the season. However there is plenty of untapped excitement waiting in the wings with Essaouira, Moon of Baroda, Miss Belleza, Tariks and San Cristobel all shaping up to be smart sprinting forces in the coming months.

Although slightly less in numbers, the rising 3 year old colts look to be an interesting bunch of well bred runners with the Stakes winning Common Interest looking set for a Guineas prep. Although a dissapointing debut effort, The Comedian is making amends and appears to have returned a more mature specimen. Similary the Exceed and Excel Dominguin and the Redoute's Choice L'Heretier are colts with Spring aspirations and stallion's pedigree to boot. Rest assured there are a couple of unraced colts that are likely to appear in the coming weeks that could also "spark up" the excitment of Spring Glory.

Lee Freedman went on to say "There is plenty of depth there and it will only a require a couple of these to make the next step to Group 1 level to make the Spring a memorable one. . . . . . needless to say, I remember sitting in the training hut in July 2005 hoping that one of my 2 year olds would do just that! And then the next thing I know is that Benicio won the Derby and Serenade Rose won the Oaks and I had a host of other talented horses chomping at the bit behind them."
