Smokin' at Sandown

23rd February, 2012

Smokin' Joey returned to his best form by breaking the 1400-metre track record at Sportingbet Park Sandown on Wednesday.

The 4YO gelding, with 60kg on his back, scorched over the Hillside track to win in 1min 21.99 secs.

It was only Smokin Joey's second win in 17 starts, but he has always competed at a high level. His first win was at his debut in the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield as a juvenile.

Smokin' Joey, bred and raced by Joe Lanteri and his family, is a brother to former top-class galloper Our Smoking Joe and a half-brother to smart filly Gallant Lady - both also raced by the Lanteris and trained at Markdel.

Smokin' Joey gave a hint that he was ready for a big performance when he finished second behind Luck San at Sandown (1200m) on February 8 after a slow beginning. Luck San is expected to go on to be competitive at Stakes level.

Jockey Steve Arnold settled Smokin' Jack back and came with a powerful finish to win running away.

"He has always shown tremendous ability, which is why he contested races like the Caulfield Guineas and Victoria Derby as a three-year-old," Anthony Freedman said.

"Hopefully, with maturity, as he is a big horse, he has turned the corner."
