The Paul Makin owned Scenica landed her first Australian win at racing head quarters. Purchased out of Argentina privately by the owner who succesfully campaigned Starcraft across the globe, Scenica has quickly come to the fore under Lee Freedman's charge.
Flashing home in her first up run over 1000m at Moonee Valley and then smashing the line after a swooping finish at Caulfield second up when running 3rd, Scenica started the last race of the afternoon as a 7/2 hot favourite and didn't dissapoint. Settling closer to the pace under Dwayne Dunn, the grey mare travelled a touch keenly in her new found running style but still had plenty in reserve as she eased off heels in the straight. Hitting the front with a furlong to run, she dug deep to hold off the challenges of the swooping mares to land the $70,000 1400m mares race in a time of 1.23:76 sec.
"She is clearly a more impressive horse when ridden off the pace" said Lee Freedman "But I needed to win the race to ensure I get into her respective stakes races down the track...........furthermore, the $42,700 for winning can only help!"
Congratualtions to Paul & Lyndall Makin the owners of Starcraft the colt that was put against the best Europe could offer during 2005. By the end of the season, with two Group 1 victories under his belt, he was honoured with the title of World Champion Older Turf Miler.
Starcraft stands at Arrowfield stud for $20,000 + GST and his first crop are currently 2yo's of which the Freedman's have been thoroughly complimentary towards.
