Pellizotti smashes his rivals in a sizzling time

3rd June, 2010

PELLIZOTTI

Pellizotti (pictured here as a yearling) went to Doomben for his 4th lifetime start and duly smashed the clock for Freedman and his loyal band of owners.

Jumping as an easing $2.40 favourite due to the "plunge" on the Kiwi trained Espresso(NZ), Jimmy Byrne had the son of Stratum jumping first and landing cleanly on the bunny. Despite a high cruising speed, the robust colt relaxed kindly in front and made every post a winner in the 1050m maiden for colts. Clicking away at the top of the straight, he duly rattled out the fastest last 600m on the day and quickly laid to rest his maiden tag.

Pellizotti is no stranger to the limelight, having fetched $425,000 when secured by Lee Freedman from the Widden Stud draft at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, making him the highest priced yearling from the first crop of Stratum. Bred by Kambula Stud in South Australia, Pellizotti (pictured as a yearling) is a half-brother to smart stakes-winning mare Strawberry Field, who was in the news earlier this week after selling for $1million at the MM National Broodmare Sale. He is the third and final foal of stakes-winning sprinter Red Labelle, who died prematurely in 2008.

Raced by a large syndicate of Freedman stable clients, that include Peter Carrick of Kaphero fame, Johnny O'Neil of Mummify, Les Smith (Mimi Labrook) Scott Springott, Duncan Grimley and the Kelly's of Newhaven Stud..........the colt has high expectations borne out of many years of racing at the elite level.

Widden Stud based Stratum now has 12 winners on the board (11 in Australia, 1 in NZ) and is the leading first season sire by Australian earnings and equal leading first season sire on Australian winners with Jet Spur, who is also on 11.

He is also the leading two year-old sire in Australia by earnings, a title that has not been won by a first season sire since his own grand-sire Danehill (USA) achieved the feat in 1993/1994.
