Sugar Babe (Photo by Robert Prezioso/Getty Images AsiaPac) was just what the doctor ordered after her delayed return to Spring racing.
Dwayne Dunn and Lee Freedman tasted their first bit of Group success together and it was fitting that the darling of the Freedman stable was the vehicle to provide that success in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.
Jumping from barrier 7, Dwayne had the daughter of Exceed and Excel settled comfortably with cover at the beginning of the turn. Confidently produced for a run at the top of the straight, Dwayne unleashed her to grab the lead with a furlong to go to win the race in a time of 1-10.42.
"What a super effort" reflected Dwayne post race "She has come here today and produced a perfect performance to compliment our belief in her."
Lee Freedman was quick to compliment these feelings by suggesting that the 1600m may now be on the cards after the way she relaxed and worked to the line "She'll go to the prelude next and assessing the way she went today, I would feel more confident that the 1600m of the 1000 Guineas may be on the cards."
"I thought Kavanagh's Whobegotyou was outstanding, however I was also delighted with Darley's Cardinal Virtue who is now placed a Group 3 level on only his second start. That would have brought him on both mentally and physically and he is a credit to Darley who trifectered the race with their stallions (Exceed & Excel - Street Cry - Elusive Quality)".
