Michael Freedman was yesterday granted his trainer's licence by the Singapore Jockey Club and the Freedman Brothers' youngest sibling looks set for an international career in the limelight.

"I've always viewed Singapore racing as a most progressive and exciting racing arena and the opportunity to train at Kranji is a great honour and an exciting challenge," said Michael Freedman (aged 39).

"Our success in Australia was not overnight and I am under no illusions that the forthcoming year will be a challenge that will test me beyond what I have previously experienced within the Freedman Brothers fold. However, this challenge is a fundamental driving force in me taking up this exciting role within Singapore."

Furthermore, Michael's new role will add an another dimension to Freedman Racing in offering Freedman clients a progressive option to race horses in Singapore for substantial sums of prizemoney.

"To my mind, I can offer our existing clients with horses that are necessarily up to Saturday class the opportunity to race for Singaporean Prizemoney that, at its lowest end, is a minimum of SING$ 35,000 (AUS $27,800 approximately). Furthermore, the top end of racing or Class 1's as they are referred to are running for approximately $100,000 Australian and there are 25 feature races run at Kranji throughout the year that have purses that start at Sing $250,000 and at the top end are Sing $1.5 million," he said.

"I intend to train around 40 horses," said Michael. "And I am also thoroughly grateful to those owners who have already promised me their support for the future. However, all of them were immediately taken with the idea of recouping their costs with horses that didn't match up in town." Michael was quick to add: "It's an option we have never had before and I have no doubt the support will be reciprocal with far eastern investors wanting to race horses in Australia."

With the licence due to begin at the beginning of April, the next few months will be a busy time for the youngest Freedman. "Thankfully my wife Anna and my three children Max, Jess and Sophie are all 100 per cent behind the move and I can't wait to get my teeth stuck into training in Singapore."
