Marshall delivers first-week Nozomi stunner

5th August, 2017

Racing.com's Grace Ramage reported:

Resuming stayer Nozomi caused one of the biggest upsets Flemington has seen in years, and handed apprentice Taylor Marshall his first Melbourne metropolitan winner at just his third attempt.

The Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained six-year-old was rated a whopping $151 chance at times to win The Rails Handicap (1400m) and astounded many with a brilliant ground-saving ride by the 24-year-old jockey as he edged out Divine Mr Artie, with Sin to Win third.

Marshall is based with Danny O’Brien at Flemington after relocating from Sydney when his master Michael Freedman moved to Hong Kong.

The son of Melbourne Cup winning jockey John said earlier in the day it was a dream come true just to ride at Flemington and was thrilled to register a winner on his first day at headquarters.

“He’s (John Marshall) ridden a thousand times here at Flemington and now it’s my first day here, so great to get off to a winning start,” said the younger Marshall

“It’s been a really, really great week for me, first week I’ve been down here in Melbourne. I was able to get an early winner at Warrnambool on Tuesday and now one today, so been a busy week but off to a great start.

“(I’m) very grateful for the opportunities.”

Freedman's Racing Manager Brad Taylor was as shocked as anyone and said he certainly didn’t predict the result.

“We just thought he’d be here for a bit of a run around to build his fitness looking for a trip further than today,” said Taylor.

“Originally we were going to go to the 1200m race today but Lee [Freedman] pulled the right rein and said ‘no we are going to the benchmark 84 1400m’ and that’s why he’s a Hall Of Fame trainer.

“When Nozomi’s right he’s pretty good, which you can see going back looking through his races.

“Hopefully this win will lead him to better races.”
