Joey Lights up Caulfield.

The journalists broke into a run towards Lee Freedman once Smokin Joey had crossed the line in his last to first demolition of the Listed Blue Saphire Stakes field at Caulfield and they weren't dissapointed with his assessment. "I think he is better than his brother" stated Lee in reference to Our Smokin Joe who won the Group 2 St George and was retired recently with some memorable runs in some this country's better Group 1's over 2000m plus.

Bred by the Lantieri boys, Smokin Joey is the 6th foal of the Blazing Sword mare Dalzing, a Goulburn maiden winner whom Joe Lantieri bought in 1993 for about $15,000. A full brother to the former Lee Freedman warhorse in Our Smokin Joe who win 10 races and $1.6 million in prizemoney, Smokin Joey is also an entire colt by the champion sire Encosta De Lago and a half brother to Gallant Lady (by Galileo) who Lee trained to run second in the previous Saturday's Listed St Leger.

Smokin Joey's win in this race emulated Ortensia and Black Cavier both previous winners of the races short history.

"He's certainly shown a lot more than his brother at the same stage," said Lee Freedman

Freedman's other first starter, Kookaburras, a Redoute's Choice half-brother to his former champion filly Alinghi, was fourth and Lee felt that the future remains bright for a colt that "had promised us plenty at home."

Smokin' Joey, ($3.20 to $6.50) was slow to begin before angling wide in the straight and sprinting hard. Ridden by Chris Symons, he scored by two lengths from well-backed Miss Elvee ($5 into $3.80), who raced to the lead at the 200m.

"He's an enormous striding horse with a lot of ability and he's certainly going to get over more ground," Symons said.

Freedman was equally impressed. "It was a terrific win, really. He did it the hard way, coming from last and coming around them," he said.

Freedman will take Smokin' Joey to Brisbane for the Sires Produce Stakes, to be used as a springboard to the Caulfield Guineas in October.
