Tawqeet,At Talaq,Jeune,Almaraad and Marooned are just a few examples of well bred horses that have made the transition from Northern to Southern Hemisphere racing. Why have they thrived and captured numerous Cups between them?
Arguably, these horses are bred with one purpose in mind; the 2400m English Derby as a 3 year old. Where as Australian horses have been bred with the 1200m Golden Slipper at the forefront of the breeder's mind. In short, if it is one of the Cups that we are chasing, it makes sense to recruit at the source of the stayer and head to England.
And to England did Anthony and Dr Walker go!
The Newmarket Horses in Training Sale in the UK ran from October 27th through to the 30th and had 1700 horses in training catalogued. The sale has produced numerous Group 1 winners in the last 10 years (Collier Hill, Les Arcs, Desert Lord and Japan Cup winner Alkaased) and Anthony Freedman is confident that the following 6 purchases have the potential to live up to our expectations.
Lot 181 TOMINTOUL FLYER 57,000gns aprox AUD $149k
Dr Fong x Miller's Melody (Chief Singer)
This is a tough, honest colt who would be the soundest horse to pass through the ring all week. He has been racing from May through to October without a break and hasn't had a lame step all year. He will improve considerably for being gelded and will appreciate the style of racing in Australia. He is five pound higher in the ratings than Bauer was at this stage in his career. He also has shown very solid European form, only a month ago he was beaten just over a length by subsequent Breeders Cup Marathon winner Muhannak. The lads at his previous trainers (Henry Cecil) claim that there is plenty "left in the tank" and he will improve a lot for a spell.
Lot 196 MEASUREMENT 67,000gns aprox AUD $175k
Viking Ruler x El-Libaab (Unfuwain)
This is a lovely, athletic looking colt who looks as tough as nails. He is a stakes placed two year old and has run in some of the top European two year old races. He will certainly improve with age and will relish running over further distances in time. His trainer was very disappointed to not only have sold him but to also to have let him go for so cheap. His form holds up well, he has beaten Firth of Fifth who previously had won the Group 2 Superlative stakes and he has won or been placed in five of his seven starts. His pedigree suggests that whatever he did at two was just a bonus and he will come into his own as a three year old, just like his sire and dam sire. He could be a proper horse in a year's time.
Lot 474 WOODCUTTER 54,000gns aprox AUD $141,000 aprox
Daylami x Cinnamon Rose
This colt was Anthony's favourite horse in the sale and is delighted to have got him at a price less than we expected. Formally owned by Sheikh Mohammed’s wife Princess Hiya of Jordan, this colt has had 5 starts for a win, second and a third. He won over a 1 1/2 miles by 4.5 lengths on good to firm going the start before last and the racingpost reported "WOODCUTTER, rated 85, set a fair standard on the strength of his narrow defeat to Meydan City last time. King O'The Gypsies was third on that occasion, but Woodcutter beat him far easier here and looks to be improving. He convincingly saw out the 1m4f, trying the trip for the first time. This opens up further options, and with his confidence boosted with a maiden success, there's no reason why he can't keep on going forward."
Lot 926 TRENCHTOWN 42,000gns aprox $110,250
King's Best - Barbuda (Rainbow Quest))
TIMEFORM 91
This is a tall, leggy colt who is certain to improve with age and being gelded (A Kings Best gelding won a stakes race just yesterday). He is very much in the mould of his broodmare sire Rainbow Quest and will make a better four year old. He has shown solid form this year, highlighted by his second to Patkai (who won the Group 3 Queen Vase on his next start) and his unlucky sixth in the King George V. His form tailed off slightly on his last two starts however he had been on the go since the middle of April. He loves good fast ground and will be ideally suited to flat Australian tracks (he was undone by the undulations at Newmarket and Goodwood on his last two starts). There should be plenty of improvement in him and he is a nice staying prospect.
Lot 1150 TIMETABLE 45,000gns aprox $118,125
(Observatory x Clepsydra (Sadler's Wells))
TIMEFORM 88 (prior to winning last Friday!)
This is a well balanced, good looking colt who won his last start on Saturday. He is a very well bred colt being a half brother to Group 1 winner Passage of Time and being closely related to Observatory's leading son Twice Over. He is a horse who will again improve considerably for being gelded (his trainer states he has plenty of talent he just needs to channel it). His win on saturday was impressive and the Racing Post stated "He is better than his current mark suggests and it might be that he is beginning to get his act together". The family improve with age and he will be no exception.

Lot 1188 - SOUND OF NATURE 24,000gns aprox $63,000
(Chester House x Yashmak (Danzig))
TIMEFORM 93+
This is a lovely, strong colt with both ability and a great pedigree. He is by the sire of the moment, Chester House, who sired two Breeder's Cup winners last week and he is out of Yashmak, a Group 1 winning half sister to Commander in Chief and Warning. He is a very lightly raced five year old (he has only run seven times) due to two seperate and unlucky injuries. However he is 100% sound now and has the ability to be competitive at any level. Henry Cecil old assistant was desperate to obtain the horse having looked after him for his three and four year old season stating that he is one of the most talented horses in his care, he was the underbidder to us. This is backed up by Gallops expert Tony Elves who included Sound of Nature in his Racing Post gallop report on a monthly basis. An exciting prospect.
