Lee Freedman and David Hayes struggle for the '08 / '09 Victorian Trainers title is going right down to the wire.
Hall of Fame trainers David Hayes and Lee Freedman are engaged in a head-to-head battle for the '08 / '09 Victorian Metropolitan Trainers Premiership with Freedman currently leading his arch rival by three metropolitan wins.
With 10 metropolitan race meetings remaining until the end of the 2008/2009 racing season, each metropolitan win is crucial to the tally with Freedman currently on 64 wins to Hayes' 61.
"I am far from confident" says the ever competitive Lee Freedman. "64 wins doesn't win a premiership, but on the same token I would rather be in my shoes than David's".
With only two acceptors for Sandown on Wednesday and only a couple of likely runners on Saturday at Flemington the competition may well boil down to David's ability to produce the numbers on Metropolitan racedays (for example David has 6 acceptors at Sandown). If Hayes takes out the Metropolitan Premiership this year it will be his second consecutive win and eighth in total, while Freedman has six titles to his name.
"Its going down to the wire, but I must admit the most important point for me is that my strike rate remains comparatively strong and I have a strong hand going into the Spring."
