As his name suggests Rock Home Late rallied late in the 3yo 1400m at Flemington to pick of David Hayes's runner Burley Griffin (photo courtesy of Getty Images & Scott Barber)
With Dwayne Dunn on board, the Rock of Gibraltar gelding settled on the pace trailed the Hayes runner throughout the first 1/2 mile. With the leading leading jockey's sneaking easy fractionals, the race was already out of contention for the backmarkers as the leading duo skipped two lengths clear in the straight and hard fought was duly won by the Sydney owned Freedman galloper in the relatively leisurely time of 1min 23.84 sec.
Rock Home Late has now won close to $100,000 in prizemoney and his win on Saturday was a sharp reversal of form to his previous effort over the mile at Caulfield 3 weeks previously.
"He has ran up to his work from Tuesday" Said Lee Freedman from Eagle Farm "The blinkers have switched him, the ride gave no hope to the back markers and the beaten favourite and he clearly relishes the 7 furlongs as opposed to the mile."
When quizzed as to his progress from here, the response was simple "He runs well fresh and I can't rule out him running the mile in time. But the long and the short of it now is to place him where he won't be to badly penalised at the weights." Said a typically pragmatic Hall of fame trainer.
Congratulations to the winning connections and a delighted Marcus Levy was happy to accept the trophy on behalf of N Buckland, A MacIntosh, M A Manttan, A J Paull, N M Lea, T McLuckie, Rock Home Late Synd, M S Millar & S B Millar.
