Follonica, pictured with her owners, comfortably won on debut at Kyneton in the manner of a filly going places.
Partnered by Dwayne Dunn, the bay Flying Spur filly settled off the pace in the Italian blue silks of the majority owner Leo Pegoli. Stalking the pace throughout the early stages of the 1100m maiden Dwayne Dunn eased her between runners with 600m to run and despite looking raw and green picked up the bit and worked to the outside. In a matter of strides she had gone past the city placed Paparazzi Princess and had quickly forged a 3 length lead before being eased down to the line.
Purchased by Lee Freedman for $70,000 at the 2009 Inglis Easter sales, Follonica (named after an Italian town) is the second foal of the city winning Zabeel mare Get The Hint which would suggest that her precocity is drawn from her sire Flying Spur, whom Lee Freedman trained to win the Golden Slipper.
"She was the sixth lot into the ring at Easter last year and I bought her without any owners in mind." Said Lee Freedman "Having trained her father, I thought she also had the scope to be a nice classic filly as a three year old.......I'm glad I haven't lost my touch to buy a nice one!"
"I thought her win was full of merit" reflected DLF "She relaxed well for a filly that can be a bit headstrong and I was really pleased with the way she worked between horses, before coming to the outside and sprinting hime."
"I will just keep my options open before commiting to her next run." Said Lee "But I have had terrific success with horses breaking their maiden at Kyneton; Schillachi being perhaps my best!"
Such news will have the owners of Follonica quivering with excitment, with particular reference to TVN's Jason Richardson whose dapper (but loud) suits adorn Channel 522 on a Friday night with Moonee Valley Racing.
"Its too much pressure!" was Jason's reponse when quizzed about his involvement with Follonica.
