Freedman striking hot

22nd September, 2011

The Freedman stable continued its impressive run, and strike rate, with a winning double at Sandown on Wednesday.

In fact, Anthony Freedman was unlucky not to train a treble from only four runners. He now has trained 13 winners at a healthy strike rate of 16.66 per cent. Freedman's six city winners places him third on the metropolitan training premiership at a strike rate of 22.22 per cent.

The late-maturing, but very impressive Yavanna (pictured) kicked off the day with an eye-catching win in the 0-82 race for mares (1300m), charging home from near last with Ben Melham in the saddle.

The double was achieved when the consistent Typeface won the 0-89 (1300m) – both horses are owned by Darley.

Freedman believes Yavanna has a bright future. "We've always liked her a lot, although she's had issues and needed time. She's matured now and she's been worth waiting for," he said.

"Her ability warrants looking at better races and I have told Darley that we should try and get through to Listed level during the spring, and then look at better races in the autumn."

Yavanna is a four-year-old mare by Redoute's Choice from the well-bred Stakes winner Wild Queen.

Typeface has won four of his 10 starts, his past two at Sandown in commanding style.

"He's never really run a bad race, in fact, he hasn't finished further back than fourth. Like a lot of Elusive Quality stock, he's improving with maturity," Freedman said.

Rescue Mission almost gave the stable a winning treble when he beat all but the highly rated Huegill in the 3YO 0-72 (1400m) after leading to the shadows of the post. Rescue Mission raced on the inside, which proved throughout the day to be the wrong place to be, so the run was full of merit.
