Anthony Freedman's incredible run in his first training season continued when he took out a Stakes double for Darley at Morphettville last Saturday.
Importantly, both winners - the three-year-olds Cornell and Crucial - are first-time Stakes winners, which adds tremendous value their pedigrees because the dams of both winners are being bred in Australia by Darley.
Cornell (3g, Elusive Quality - Ivy League) is headed for the Group 1 South Australian Derby after his impressive win in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1600m) - his second win from as many starts since finishing down the track in the Group 1 Victoria Derby when he hurt himself. Cornell is an improving stayer, who will be suited by the 2500 metres of the Derby.
Crucial (f 3, Nadeem - Dawn Attack) is now a very valuable filly for Darley following her win in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m). She is now headed for the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) and the Group 3 South Australian Oaks (2500m).
Crucial's dam, Dawn Attack, is a half-sister to Desert King, so she has an international pedigree of some note. Crucial's third dam also is the dam of Group 1 winner and top sire Maroof.
Both horses were very well ridden by Vlad Duric, who almost landed the stable a Stakes treble when First Command was narrowly beaten in the Group 3 Irwin Stakes.
Last week Duric steered the much-improved Smokin' Joey to win the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield.
Added to Mawingo's impressive win at Flemington, it was a big weekend for the Anthony Freedman team. This season Freedman has won 11 Stakes races, at a winning strike rate of 16.1 per cent.
