Exceedingly Good to Secret Hill

29th May, 2009

Exceedingly Good is set to become the world's first son of Exceed and Excel to go to stud, as he joins the stallion roster at Queensland's Secret Hill Farms in 2009.

Following in the footsteps of Danehill's first son to stud Danzero, and Redoute's Choice's first son Not A Single Doubt, Exceedingly Good carries on the successful tradition of speed descendants of the great Danehill sireline in Australia.

Exceedingly Good, an outstanding two year old trained by Lee Freedman, won the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate and the Listed Maribyrnong Trial at Flemington and will be best remembered for his early brilliance and precocity, two attributes coveted by breeders and owners alike in a young sire.

Continuing the great Danehill legacy, Exceedingly Good is well placed to emulate the feats of his sire, Exceed and Excel, who from just two crops has produced the likes of Sugar Babe, Infamous Angel, Wilander, Believe 'N' Succeed, Baby Corn, Noesis, Mrs. Kipling and Group 1 Blue Diamond winner Reward For Effort.

Bred by Tony Santic’s Makybe Stud, Exceedingly Good was purchased as a yearling by Grant Pritchard-Gordon of Badgers Bloodstock and Lee Freedman at the 2007 Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $400,000.

"I have purchased a lot of good colts in the last 25 years, but I can confidently say that Exceedingly Good was as much of a standout on type as Flying Spur or Encosta de Lago......He was simply the complete yearling and I am delighted that he was able to transform his looks into racecourse performance." Lee Freedman

Pedigree wise Exceedingly Good ticks all the boxes being by young super sire Exceed and Excel (Danehill) from stakes performed mare Common Smytzer (Snippets), also the dam of this year's Melbourne juvenile stakes winner Common Interest.

Placed in the Vain Stakes and 4th in the Group 3 Danehill Stakes as a 3yo, Exceedingly Good was retired due to a hind leg injury, robbing his connections of a chance at further glory and a group win at three. Queensland breeders are set to gain however as the young sire offers the blood of both Danehill and Snippets with proven racecourse performance and the good looks to produce commercial yearlings at the sales.

"He was a pleasure to train and was epitome of the Australian thoroughbred - precocious, fast and tough. Needless to say his injury in the spring of his 3 year old career was hugely disappointing for everyone as I had high hopes for him as a sprinting force." Lee Freedman

Secret Hill owner John Doherty, with the aid of Blue Sky Thoroughbreds' Julian Blaxland has acquired a significant band of boutique broodmares in recent years including stakes mares Cheeky Choice, Superfly, Gwendolyn and Chinamora.

The Doherty's share a passion for breeding and racing and are excited along with Secret Hill Farms stud manager Don Mackinnon for the prospects of Exceedingly Good at stud.

"He's what we all look for in a young stallion; type, pedigree and racecourse performance" commented Mackinnon,

"The colonial speed sons and grandsons of Danehill consistently produce what breeders, owners and trainers demand in Australia, sound, early running types that train on - this colt is the complete package".

Exceedingly Good (pictured) will stand his first season at **Secret Hill Farms at $7,000 + GST **

A limited number of shares in Exceedingly Good will be offered prior to the 2009 breeding season.

Please contact Sam Pritchard-Gordon to discuss the possibility of purchasing shares or sending a mare to Exceedingly Good for the coming season.

Secret Hill Farms will have a marquee at the MM sales from Sunday where clients can discuss the stallions with new manager Don Mackinnon and Julian Blaxland.
