Easier class at Flemington to suit luckless Group I runner

9th June, 2017

Darryl Sherer (Racenet) reported

An unlucky runner in a Group I race last time out reappears at Flemington on Saturday and trainer Lee Freedman is confident of a big showing.

Santa Ana Lane came from near last around the home turn to be beaten two lengths into fifth behind Vega Magic in the Group I Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on May 20 and reverts to open company on Saturday.

Santa Ana Lane was nominated for the Listed June Stakes at Randwick as well as the Bruce Gadsden Handicap over the straight 1000m at Flemington however, Freedman felt the firmer surface at Flemington was more suitable and the four-year-old stayed at home.

"He's better on a firmer surface and Randwick looks pretty heavy. He's a very fit horse, ran a fantastic race in the Goodwood and has come through that well," Freedman, who trains Santa Ana Lane in partnership with his brother Anthony, said.

"We don't do a lot of galloping with him and he seems to be better for it,"

The Goodwood run followed a dominant victory in the Wagga Town Plate under 61kg, coming from second last around the home turn to score in 1:09.48.

"Obviously the Wagga race wasn't near the class of his last start but he carried a huge weight and ran time," Freedman said.

"With an ounce of luck I think he runs a place in the Goodwood and that backed up the merit of the Wagga run."

The Town Plate was the first win in 12 starts for Santa Ana Lane who won three of his first four starts including the Listed Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield in February 2016.

"This horse showed a lot of promise early in his career and then went off the boil a bit. As he's got older we've recognised how he likes to race - let him get back out of it and let him run home," Freedman said.

"His last two races have been those of a high-class sprinter and I think he'll be hard to beat on Saturday."

Mark Pegus has ridden Santa Ana Lane, a best priced $2.90 favourite with several wagering operators, at his last two starts and will be in the saddle again at Flemington.
