As tough as teak - Gibraltar Moon

9th June, 2009

Gibraltar Moon fought gallantly to land her fourth successive win at Flemington on the Queen's Birthday Weekend (photo courtesy of Scott Barbour/Getty Images).

Gibraltar Moon has quickly stamped her dominance in the off season 2 year old events and her win on Saturday further enhanced her reputation as a tough, consitent galloper with a bright future.

Undertaking the starters orders for the 3rd successive time over the 5 furlongs, the daughter of Rock of Gibraltar quickly found her stride and towed Ibahim Gundogdu (a2) to the front. Challenged at the furlong and quickly headed, the diminuative chestnut dug deep and rallied to come back and win the race in a bobbing finish from Greg Eurell's Masai Miss in a relatively slick time of 57.77 sec.

"She is as tough as teak." Said Lee Freedman "Its difficult for any horse to win four successive races, but she knuckled down to her task and I have a growing respect for her off the back of that performance.....espcially as she was giving weight to the entire field."

Gibraltar Moon is likely to go for a spell now, but the title race for the trainer's premiership remains highly coverted. Gibraltar Moon's win took DLF's lead over D Hayes to 4. However, a win for the Lindsay Park stable later on in the day had leaves the current standings at:

Lee Freedman 64 Metropolitan winners & 147 Victorian Winners
David Hayes 61 Metropolitan winners & 115 Victorian Winners
