A Tribute to one of the best - Miss Andretti

4th September, 2008

MISS ANDRETTI

Miss Andretti's retirement to stud is another chapter closed in a remarkable story.

The late Ray Cochrane bred Miss Andretti from his stud in Capel, south of Bunbury in Western Australia. From less than exquisite bloodlines, Miss Andretti is the 1st foal of an unraced Marooned mare called Peggies Bid. To be exact, Miss Andretti was the first horse in five generations of her pedigree to win a Stakes race and in fact only two previous relations in her family had made the step up to City Company. Miss Andretti was a daughter of Ihtiram, a resilient galloper by Royal Academy that barely measured up to listed class whilst in training with John Dunlop in the UK. However he was elegantly bred in the blue as a half brother to Hemmingway and Second Empire and in turn from the family of Salsabil etc. However she hardly had the makings of a Champion Racehorse though!

However, when Dave Mueller spotted the attractive white markings of a weanling at Ray Cochrane's stud in 2002, the beginning of another story had begun.

Ray Cochrane told Dave that he could have the filly and was allowed to pay for her after she won a race and the rest is history!

Dave Mueller broke her in and revelled in the delight that he had a fast one. She won her maiden at her first crack at Pinjarra racetrack. Dave intelligently brought her through her next 15 starts, which include some remarkable feats and Group 2 success in the Winterbottom Stakes. After 9 wins and disappointment in the Oakleigh Plate, Sean Buckley stepped in to purchase her.

Lee Freedman took her to the next level and close to $2.8 million in prizemoney with wins in the McEwan, the Manikato, the Schillaci, the Newmarket, the Australian, the Age Classic and less not forgot her memorable win in the Kings Stand at Ascot. A champion in every sense of the word whose fight, speed and brilliance has become the benchmark for every sprinter hence forth.

And so the diminutive little mare from WA retires to visit Excel & Excel as a 19 time winner of 5 Group 1 races and following of supporters that number many thousand.
