Dane Julia (pictured winning her Group 1 in New Zealand last year) landed "the bikkies" at Warwick Farm in the Listed Wiggle Quality Stakes.
In what amounted to a harmonious collaboration of former "Rainbow Nation" residents, Glynn Schofield calmly landed Dane Julia just in behind the pace over the 1400m at Warwick Farm. Although a touch keen in the blinkers, which had been added for this event, Schofield eased the mare onto the heels of the leaders as they rounded for home. Taking an inside run, the former South African Group 1 winner sprinted clear on the slow 7 surface and was dogged to the line to hold off the challenges of Bejewelled and Messenger.
"I know there was a a query over whether she would handle the track conditions." said Glynn Schofield "But I was super impressed with the way that she fought her way to the line as she was a very tired horse by the end. She could barely pick up her feet on her way back to scales!"
On discussing the mare in South Africa Glynn said "I remember her very well. I believe she won five on the trot and I must have followed her heels on every one of those occaisions. She used to be very hard going in South Africa, but Lee has done a terrific job with her and I think she will only improve off this performance."
Lee Freedman reviewed the performance with much admiration "Sean Buckley has always been adament that she is a better filly right handed and her performance today was very true to that. Furthermore, she has made significant improvement since this time last year and although her race record reads only fairly, it has been blighted through bad luck and poor barriers."
"She has won a Group 1 in South Africa & New Zealand and I want to win one in Australia with her now! She'll go to the Coolmore and be very competitive.......Her form says so! (Said Lee with reference to Hurtle Myrtle's 1/2 length second to More Joyous in the previous race......Dane Julia beat her home first up!)
Congratualtions to Ultra THoroughbreds and Sean Buckley.
