Dwayne Dunn and Brazen Hussey (pictured) got off to the dream start for the Freedman Stable on Saturday at Caulfield in the 1100m Sapphire Handicap for mares.
Swooping from near last to grab a relatively comfortable victory, Dwayne sat down with the Herald Sun's Adrian Dunn post race to discuss his promising start for Hall of Fame Trainer Lee Freedman;
"I didn't give her (Brazen Hussey) a peach of a ride and it's good to get rid of that bit of pressure," Dunn said. "You do feel it. You are taking up a big job. It's a three-year contract and you want to get it right from the start."
"When you ride horses like Royal Asscher, you expect them to win. She got blocked a little bit, but still had her chance. Lee was really good. You have to stand up and be counted. Everyone has a job to do, and if you don't do it, you are going to be in trouble," Dunn said.
After Lee Freedman approached him about the position, Dunn spent a week or so considering it. He sought the advice of David Hayes, the trainer who provided him with the bulk of his Group 1 success.Hayes encouraged Dunn to take up the position. He told Dunn if the opportunity arose, he would have no hesitation in giving him big-race rides. Dunn, 35, decided it was just the challenge he needed.
"I thought I've probably got another five years left at my best. I've done all the hard yards, and if I don't do something like this now, I'll never do it," Dunn said.
Four days into the new season, The Freedman Racing stable has sent out 8 runners for 3 winners and Mr D Dunn has a 50 p/c strike rate for the stable.
