SPEED GIFTED stepped out of quarantine on the 14th February into the searing heat of a Melbourne Summer. However a touch of Lee Freedman husbandry has seen this son of Montjeu break onto the Australian racing scene in a remarkable manner.
Speed Gifted had his first 8 starts under the care of Luca Cumani, for 2 wins and 2 thirds. However, it was apparant that Cumani had an opinion of the then entire colt as his entire 4 year old career was spent competing in open Group company. In fact, Speed Gifted's win in yesterday's Open 1620m Handicap was the first time the horse had begun in race under 2400m.
"It is difficult to improve horses that come from one the most respected trainers in Europe." Said Sam Pritchard-Gordon "But I can assure you that when these UK horses arrive in the Lee's care they thrive on the Australian way of doing things." Pritchard-Gordon went on to say "Their work is condensed, their feed is improved and they are given the opportunity to enjoy life outside of their box."
Speed Gifted was a "pick up" from Anthony Freedman's progressive trip to the UK in November 2008. Initially drawn to the idea of aquiring thoroughbreds with true staying blood, Anthony Freedman drew together some terrific Australian backing and headed the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale and purchased 6 colts that have subsequently fallen under the ownership of the Ball and Chain Syndicate. Speed Gifted's connections consequently appreciated the Ozzie trainer's progressive thought process and the rest is now history.
"Its a relief to see that he has acclimatised to Australia" said Lee Freedman "and I won't be drawn into pitching him towards a Melbourne Cup next preparation. But, I can assure you that the thought of a thoroughbred that is bred to run 2400m plus is a highly exciting prospect and I will be getting to work shortly to pitch a future campaign that give his connections plenty of enjoyment, financial return and the continued hope that they might just have a potential Melbourne Cup galloper."
